CCD-type scanners typically contain three rows arrays of sensors with red, green, and blue filters. The detection is done via CCD or a photomultiplier tube. ADF scanners, whilst very fast and very good at batch scanning, also require pre- and post- processing of the documents. Some scanners, especially those designed for scanning printed documents, only work in black-and-white but most modern scanners work in color. Film, however, is where drum scanners continue to be the tool of choice for high-end applications. It is not required that the documents or objects being scanned make contact with the document camera, therefore increasing flexibility of the types of documents which are able to be scanned. Mechanically driven scanners that move the document are typically used for large-format documents, where a flatbed design would be impractical.
